EFTA and Colombia hold fourth Joint Committee meeting and fifth Sub-committee meeting

The meetings provided an opportunity for the Parties to review the operation of the FTA and to exchange views on recent economic and trade developments. They discussed the implementation and functioning of the agreement and addressed opportunities to further enhance trade and economic cooperation.

The Joint Committee reviewed the overall operation of the FTA and reaffirmed both sides’ commitment to further strengthening their economic partnership. In addition, matters related to government procurement, trade and sustainable development, and cooperation were discussed. The Parties welcomed the constructive exchange and underlined the importance of continued dialogue and cooperation within the framework of the agreement.

The Sub-committee discussed and reviewed technical matters arising from the implementation of the FTA, and exchanged views on possible new approaches in several areas pertaining to rules of origin and trade facilitation.

Economic relations between the EFTA States and Colombia

Colombia is an important trading partner for EFTA. In 2025, bilateral merchandise trade between the EFTA States and Colombia amounted to approximately EUR 1.34 billion, with EFTA exports to Colombia reaching EUR 655 million and imports from Colombia amounting to EUR 682 million. Since the FTA entered into force, bilateral trade has more than doubled, and EFTA’s long-standing trade surplus has shifted into a deficit. Since 2022, Colombia’s exports to EFTA have largely diversified through the exportation of mineral fuels to Iceland and Norway, and through its continuous expansion of coffee exports to Norway. Bilateral trade covers a diverse range of sectors, with EFTA exports including pharmaceuticals, organic chemicals, watches, machinery and precision instruments, and imports from Colombia including agricultural products, mineral fuels and other goods.
