Reliable, responsive and complete vital statistics provide essential information on populations that is critical for sustainable and inclusive development. Particularly for the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals, vital statistics are required to measure and monitor all population-based targets and indicators.

From 7 to 11 October, the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) Statistical Office, Statistics Norway and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), organised a workshop for north and central Asian countries in Kyrgyzstan (Bishkek). The purpose was to improve the capacity of national civil registration and vital statistics’ (CRVS) systems in the production and dissemination of vital statistics. About 30 participants from Asian countries and other international organisations like the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), etc. were present at this event.
