
EEA Consultative Committee meets in Tartu, Estonia

Members of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) and social partners from Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein met in Tartu on 12 and 13 May 2011 for the 19th meeting of the EEA Consultative Committee.
The meeting was co-chaired by Mr Joost Meelis (EESC, Group III, Estonian Chamber of Disabled People) and Mr Halldór Grönvold (EFTA Consultative Committee, Icelandic Confederation of Labour).
The EEA Consultative Committee unanimously adopted two resolutions, namely on the Single Market Act and on Innovation in the Energy Field.Moreover, the Committee discussed a working paper titled “European Economic Governance”, in which the rapporteur explored the efforts to strengthen the economic policy and to better coordinate relevant policy areas. The Committee received substance briefings on the EESC opinion on Iceland as a candidate country. The Committee also received briefings and statements on recent developments in the EEA Agreement from the EFTA Secretariat, on behalf of the Chair of the EFTA Standing Committee, and the EFTA Surveillance Authority.
The Committee visited the Estonian Agrenska Foundation’s Tammistu Family Centre, a project which has received a grant from the Norwegian Financial Mechanism. This centre provides help and training to families with disabled children.
Representatives of the Swiss social partners attended the meeting as observers.
