In a recent news release published by Eurostat, the total employment rate for people aged 15 to 64 in EU27 is 64.6%. The figures for the EFTA countries are substantially higher, with Switzerland yielding the highest employment rate of the 33 countries included in the Eurostat news release with 79.2%.

Iceland follows next at 78.3%, while Norway is fourth with 76.4%. Iceland has the highest employment rate for women (76.5%) and by far the highest for the specific age group 55 to 64 (80.2%). Switzerland has the greatest employment rate for men (84.5%).

Of the EU27 countries, the Netherlands (77.0%) and Denmark (75.7%) have the highest total employment rates, while Malta (54.9%) and Hungary (55.4 %) are found to have the lowest. Of the three EU candidate countries presented, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia yields the lowest employment rate at 43.3%, while Turkey has by far the lowest employment rate for women, calculated at 24.2%.
