Expert Meeting on Modernizing Statistical Legislation

On the 18 and 19th November, the Online Expert Meeting on Modernizing Statistical Leiglsation was organised by UNECE, the EFTA Statistical Office (ESO), the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) and others. Improving the governance of statistical production and the legal framework is fundamental for producing high-quality statistics. The purpose of this meeting was to review existing legal concepts (GLOS) and to strengthen legal provisions with regard to data access, ethics and data governance. Official statistics play an important role in democratic societies as they provide policy makers, public authorities and citizens with evidence based information in order to support actions.
Around 40 national statistical institutes and different international organizations participated in the online Expert Meeting on Modernizing Statistical Legislation. Topics covered touched on issues like access to privately held data, data ethics, data governance and stewardship from a regulatory perspective. Volker Täube, the director of the EFTA Statistical Office opened the event together with Nicola Shearman from the ONS UK, Chair of the Organizing Committee and Lidia Bratanova, director of the UNECE Statistical Division.
