On 19 May 2025, EFTA Secretary-General Kurt Jäger met with the Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, Mr Genadi Arveladze, at the EFTA Secretariat in Geneva to discuss ongoing trade and economic relations between EFTA and Georgia.

The meeting provided an opportunity to exchange views on the implementation of the EFTA–Georgia Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and to explore avenues for further enhancing bilateral economic cooperation. Both sides underlined the importance of deepening trade relations and leveraging the existing FTA to foster economic growth and mutual benefits for businesses from the EFTA States and Georgia.

The discussions addressed the current state of trade flows and potential sectors for increased collaboration, with a focus on maximising the impact of the FTA. Both parties also highlighted efforts to facilitate trade and investment under the existing agreement.

Since 2019 – the first year the FTA was fully implemented – bilateral trade between the EFTA States and Georgia has risen from EUR 64.8 million to EUR 175.5 million, with a significant average annual growth exceeding 20%. In 2024, EFTA’s exports to Georgia were driven by pharmaceutical products, fishery, watches and essential oils, while Georgia’s exports to EFTA countries consisted primarily of knitted clothing, steel products, fruits and nuts, and beverages.
