The EFTA Council: Working with the EU to train statisticians

The EFTA Council met for the second time this year on 22 March in Geneva under the Chairmanship of Switzerland. The Council adopted the EFTA-Eurostat Technical Cooperation Programme for 2012, approved amendments to the Vaduz Convention and reviewed free trade relations with a number of countries outside the EU.
The Cooperation Programme for 2012 between EFTA and Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, provides a variety of training courses and seminars for statisticians from various countries, including Bosnia and Herzegovina, Jordan, Mongolia and Ukraine.
The Council amended the Air Transport Annex of the Vaduz Convention, which regulates relations between the EFTA countries.
The Council also reviewed the recent first round of free trade negotiations with the Central American countries of Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, and Panama, during which the structure of a draft agreement was agreed upon. It also discussed the latest round with India and the further steps that were made towards fully-fledged negotiations on market access for industrial and agricultural products as well as services.
The next Council meeting is scheduled to be held on 16 May 2012.
