Building on the recommendations of a Joint Study Group endorsed by Ministers of the EFTA States and the Russian Federation, preparations for negotiations on a broad based Free Trade Agreement proceeded in meetings from 26 to 28 May 2010 in Geneva.

The summary of a feasibility study on closer trade and investment relations between the EFTA States and Russia was published in May 2009. Since then, preparatory work in view of free trade negotiations has continued between the relevant authorities on both sides.

The focus of the talks held between 26 and 28 May 2010 in Geneva was on the possible implications of the establishment of a customs union between Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan. Representatives from Belarus and Kazakhstan participated in the meetings as observers.

The parties aim to complete their preparatory work for free trade negotiations in the coming months, including through further meetings at expert level in selected fields.
