In May 2022, Heads of delegations from the EFTA States and Vietnam met to take stock of the ongoing free trade negotiations. The 16th round of negotiations took place from 29 May to 1 June 2018 in Oslo, Norway. Negotiations were officially launched in July 2012.

Summary

Negotiations on a broad-based Free Trade Agreement were launched in July 2012 following a positive recommendation by a Joint Study Group mandated to examine closer trade and investment relations between the Parties. The first round of negotiations was held in May 2012 and 16 rounds have been held so far.

The negotiations cover a comprehensive range of topics, including trade in goods, rules of origin, trade facilitation, sanitary and phytosanitary measures, technical barriers to trade, trade remedies, trade in services, investment/establishment, protection of intellectual property, government procurement, competition, trade and sustainable development, and legal and institutional issues.
