
On 1 September 2022, heads of delegations from the EFTA States and MERCOSUR convened via videoconference to discuss the way forward on resolving pending issues and preparing for the signing of the EFTA–MERCOSUR Free Trade Agreement.
Jan Farberg, Director General at the Norwegian Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries, acted as the EFTA spokesperson, while Sergio Iaciuk, National Director for International Trade Negotiations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship in Argentina, headed the Mercosur delegation.
In 2022, the EFTA States exported goods worth more than USD 4'663 million to MERCOSUR. The primary exports included pharmaceutical products, organic chemicals, machinery, and mechanical appliances. In return, EFTA’s imports from MERCOSUR amounted to approximately USD 3'012 million and were mainly composed of inorganic chemicals, coffee, tea, maté and spices, as well as waste from the food industries and animal feed.
