EEA Council to discuss the future of the Single Market

The 52nd meeting of the EEA Council will take place on 19 November 2019 in Brussels. The EEA Council meets twice a year at ministerial level and provides political impetus for the development of the EEA Agreement.

Discussion will focus on the importance of a well-functioning and homogenous European Economic Area. In addition to discussing the overall functioning of the EEA Agreement, the EEA Council will hold an orientation debate on the Single Market beyond 2019, during which the EEA EFTA Comment on the priorities for the Single Market beyond 2019 will be presented. 

Before the meeting of the EEA Council, the EEA EFTA Ministers will have an informal political dialogue with EU counterparts on current foreign policy issues of mutual interest. Among the topics up for discussion are the Arctic and the situation in Syria.

The Icelandic Chair of the Standing Committee of the EFTA States holds the Presidency of the EEA Council this term and the meeting will be chaired by Guðlaugur Þór Þórðarson, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Iceland. The meeting will be co-chaired by Pekka Haavisto, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Finland, representing the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

On the EEA EFTA side, the meeting will be attended by Ine Marie Eriksen Søreide, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Norway, and Sabine Monauni, Ambassador, Mission of Liechtenstein to the EU. On the EU side, the meeting is attended by members of the Council of the European Union and representatives of the European Commission and the European External Action Service.
