On 2 December 2024, the EFTA States (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland) and Ukraine concluded negotiations on the modernisation of their free trade agreement (FTA).
The negotiation process was concluded during a high-level meeting of the Heads of Delegation, with Ukraine represented by Taras Kachka, Deputy Minister of Economy and Trade Representative of Ukraine, and the EFTA States led by Sveinn K. Einarsson, EFTA Spokesperson, Director of Trade Agreements, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Iceland.
“This modernisation reaffirms the EFTA Member States’ commitment to supporting Ukraine during a critical time, strengthening its integration into the European market. By fostering closer economic ties, the updated agreement aims to contribute to Ukraine’s recovery, resilience, and long-term growth,” said Einarsson.
Taras Kachka, Deputy Minister of Economy and Trade Representative of Ukraine stated: "I would like to emphasise that the extraordinary support Ukraine has received from the EFTA States - Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein – has been invaluable. Their solidarity plays a crucial role in Ukraine's recovery and growth. We are confident that this modernized FTA will deliver tangible benefits for both Ukraine and EFTA, serving as a strong foundation for even greater cooperation in the future."
The modernised FTA will include new chapters on digital trade, small and medium-sized enterprises, and trade and sustainable development, as well as revised provisions on trade in goods, sanitary and phytosanitary measures, trade facilitation, government procurement, technical cooperation and the protection of intellectual property.
The Parties also reviewed market access for goods, liberalising trade in certain product categories. This will deepen trade relations and provide greater market access for businesses on both sides.
The Parties agreed to proceed to joint legal reconciliation of both the existing and new provisions of the agreement. After completing this procedure, the Parties will begin preparations for signing the modernised FTA.
