The EU's health strategy "Together for Health" supports the overall Europe 2020 strategy. The third Programme for the Union’s action in the field of health (2014-2020) is the main instrument the European Commission uses to implement the EU health strategy.
The programme has 4 overarching objectives. It seeks to:
- Promote health, prevent diseases and foster supportive environments for healthy lifestyles taking into account the 'health in all policies' principle,
- Protect Union citizens from serious cross-border health threats,
- Contribute to innovative, efficient and sustainable health systems,
- Facilitate access to better and safer healthcare for Union citizens.
The Health Programme is implemented by means of annual work plans which set out priority areas and the criteria for funding actions. The Health Programme is managed by the Commission with the assistance of the Consumers, Health and Food Executive Agency (Chafea).
