On 20 May 2019, the EEA Council convened in Brussels for its 51st meeting to discuss the overall functioning of the Agreement on the European Economic Area (EEA Agreement), as well as climate change and the implementation of the Paris Agreement.

The 51st meeting of the EEA Council will take place on 20 May 2019 in Brussels. The EEA Council meets twice a year at ministerial level and provides political impetus for the development of the EEA Agreement.

EEA Joint Committee incorporates decision on participation in the European Solidarity Corps

The EFTA Standing Committee and EEA Joint Committee met in Brussels on 7 and 8 May respectively. The EEA Joint Committee adopted 30 decisions incorporating 52 EU legal acts into the EEA Agreement.

EEA Joint Committee reduces backlog by record number of acts

The Standing Committee of the EFTA States and the EEA Joint Committee met in Brussels on 28 and 29 March respectively. At the Joint Committee meeting, 52 decisions (JCDs) were adopted, incorporating a record number of 234 EU legal acts into the EEA Agreement. This led to a substantial reduction of the total number of outstanding acts often referred to as the EEA Backlog.

On 22 March, the Prime Ministers of Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway met leaders of all EU Member States at the European Council, to mark the 25th anniversary of the European Economic Area, the EEA.

The Prime Ministers of the EEA EFTA States – Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway – have been invited as guests to the European Council to mark the 25th anniversary of the European Economic Area, the EEA. On this occasion, the three Prime Ministers will have an opportunity to exchange views with all EU leaders.

The EEA Joint Parliamentary Committee (EEA JPC) convened in the European Parliament in Strasbourg on 13 March 2019 to discuss Brexit, developments in the EEA Agreement, workplace harassment and coordination of social security systems.

EEA EFTA Comment on the Rights and Values Programme

On 4 March, the three EEA EFTA States – Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway – submitted a joint EEA EFTA Comment on the European Commission’s proposal for a Regulation of the European Parliament and of the European Council establishing the Rights and Values Programme.

EEA EFTA States and US expand the scope of the MRA on Marine Equipment
