On 29 March 2011, figures concerning asylum applications were published by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Union. Overall, figures show a decrease in asylum applicants in 2010 compared to 2009 in EFTA countries.
Of the EFTA countries, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland are represented in this publication. The number of asylum applicants dropped by 62.5% for Liechtenstein and 41.5% for Norway while the decrease was only 2.9% for Switzerland. The number of applicants in the 27 EU Member States decreasee by 1.1%.
In 2010, Switzerland is ranked sixth in the EU27 ranking list with 15,435 asylum applicants. In the same period, Norway received 10,025 applications, representing 3.9% of the EU27 figure of 257,815.
According to the publication, asylum applicants in the EFTA countries are mainly from the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Eritrea and Nigeria.
