On 1 July 2011, the EEA Joint Committee decided on the EEA-wide historical aviation emissions which will be used to calculate the number of aviation allowances to be available from 2012. The EEA-wide historical aviation emissions are set at 221 420 279 tonnes of CO2.
This figure represents the average of the estimated annual emissions for the years 2004, 2005 and 2006 for all flights performed by aircraft operators to and from airports within the EEA (27 EU Member States + Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein). The same methodology that was used to calculate the historical aviation emissions for the EU was applied.
