On 15 March, the EEA Joint Committee convened in the Berlaymont building in Brussels for its second meeting of 2024. The meeting was presided over by the EU Chair, Nicolas von Lingen, from the Secretariat-General of the European Commission. Iceland’s Ambassador and EFTA Chair, Kristján Andri Stefánsson, co-chaired the meeting.

In the meeting, 39 Joint Committee Decisions were adopted, incorporating 88 legal acts into the EEA Agreement and thereby reducing the backlog of acts awaiting incorporation. Among them were several important decisions, including in the field of financial services and statistics.

Two important regulations were also incorporated, namely the ASAP Regulation supporting ammunition production and the EDIRPA Regulation establishing an instrument for the reinforcement of the European defence industry through common procurement.

As EFTA Chair, Ambassador Stefánsson presented two recently submitted EEA EFTA Comments, on the proposal for a regulation specifying GDPR enforcement and on the proposal for a revised Weights and Dimensions Directive.

The EEA Joint Committee is responsible for the management of the EEA Agreement and is a forum in which views are exchanged and decisions taken by consensus to incorporate EU legislation into the EEA Agreement. The Committee comprises the ambassadors of the EEA EFTA States and representatives of the Secretariat-General of the European Union.
