The EFTA Working Group on Cultural Affairs submitted an EEA EFTA Comment to this consultation on 18 June 2010. This is of importance for the EEA EFTA States since the consultation will shape the future EU sport policy and will form the basis of a future Commission Communication on the issue.
In commenting on the EU’s focus areas in the field of sport, the EEA EFTA States highlighted that according to the new Treaty, the EU’s role is to support, coordinate and supplement the Member States’ actions in the field of sport. They welcomed the fact that the Treaty had introduced cooperation with third countries and competent international organisations with regard to sport. The EEA EFTA States also stated that they were looking forward to further developing the already excellent cooperation between the EU and the EEA EFTA States. The EEA EFTA States listed the areas in which the added value of EU action might be strongest, such as strengthening the dialogue with sport organisations to provide guidance on the application of EU law in the sports sector or collecting and analysing comparable data on the impact of sport in economic and social terms.
