Halldór Grönvold, chairing a meeting of the EFTA Consultative Committee on 19 November 2019.

It is with profound sadness that we learned about the passing of Halldór Grönvold last week. Halldór has been one of the most active, vocal and longstanding members of the EFTA Consultative Committee. The EFTA Secretariat and members of the EFTA Consultative Committee remember with fondness his warm personality and valuable contributions to our work.

He started as a member of the Committee in the early 2000 and was Chair of the Committee three times: from 2002 to 2004, from 2010 to 2012 and in 2019, a record for any Committee member. Halldór was an energetic and tireless promoter of the Committee and of EFTA. In the almost 20 years that he was a member of the Committee, he played a crucial role in promoting the interests of social partners both in EFTA and Iceland. He contributed to innumerable discussions and exchanges with Ministers, Parliamentarians and Committee members, and travelled wide and far on behalf of the Committee. Without Halldór’s engagement, subtle energy and diplomatic skills, topical issues in the area of free trade such as labour standards and environmental protections would not be as high on the agenda as they are.

Halldór is remembered by his colleagues in the Committee and the EFTA Secretariat with enormous respect and affection and is already sorely missed.
