On 6 December, the EFTA Council held its eleventh meeting of 2010. The Council reviewed the outcome of the recent EFTA Ministerial meeting and discussed free trade relations with countries outside the European Union.

The Council discussed the results of the Ministerial meeting which took place on 23 November in Geneva and looked forward to the free trade negotiations with Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, which were formally launched at that occasion.

The Council approved funding for a workshop to take place in Vietnam on 16 December to promote the closer economic relations between EFTA and Vietnam. EFTA and Vietnam are, through a joint study process, exploring the possibilities of opening free trade negotiations. The second meeting of the Joint Study Group was held in Hanoi in late November.

The Council reviewed the results of the fourth negotiating round with Hong Kong, China, which took place in Hong Kong from 30 November to 3 December, and noted with satisfaction that the process is nearing completion. Delegates also discussed the first Joint Committee meeting under the EFTA-Canada Free Trade Agreement (FTA) that took place on 17 November in Geneva. The FTA entered into force on July 2009.

The next Council meeting will be held on 13 December 2010.
