EFTA Council reviews Covid acts and prepares for second half of 2020

The EFTA Council met under the Swiss Chairmanship on 8 July 2020 in Geneva.  The meeting started with an update from the Secretariat on EFTA-EU cooperation and notably the swift incorporation of Covid-related legal acts.

The Council continued by reviewing the recent meetings with third countries held by videoconference, notably with Chile, Mercosur and Vietnam. Delegates furthermore discussed the letter received by the Secretary-General from the Kosovar Minister of Trade and Industry soliciting a first Joint Committee meeting under the Joint Declarations on Cooperation.

Delegates furthermore examined the report of the external auditor regarding the financial year 2019 and its certification by the EFTA Board of Auditors (EBOA) and referred those documents to the Budget Committee. The meeting continued by discussing the state of play of the ongoing work on strengthening EFTA’s approach to trade and sustainable development, e-commerce and transparency and the upcoming cooperation with the EFTA advisory bodies in this regard.   

Finally, Council delegates also discussed the preparations for the upcoming Ministerial meeting scheduled for October 2020 as well as the state of play of the relations between the EFTA States and the UK and the ongoing EU-UK negotiations.
