Published 15-02-2012
The EFTA Council in Geneva held its first meeting in 2012 on 15 February. Switzerland, holding the rotating Council Chair for the first six months of the year, presented its priorities. The Council also reviewed the latest negotiating round with Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan.

The priorities in the free trade area for the first half of 2012 include signing an agreement with Bosnia and Herzegovina, starting negotiations with several Central American countries, finalising negotiations with India and moving forward in the talks with Indonesia and Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan. New and ongoing free trade processes include Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines and MERCOSUR. Possibilities with other potential partners, in particular with countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, will be explored.

The Council also reviewed the results of a recent round of free trade negotiations with the members of the Customs Union of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, the first since Russia’s accession to the WTO at the end of last year. Notable progress was made during the talks, namely in trade in industrial and agricultural products.

The next Council meeting will take place on 22 March 2012
