The entry into force of the EFTA Convention fifty years ago was celebrated at an anniversary event in Geneva on 3 May, which included greetings from John Clarke, chargé d'affaires at the Mission of the European Union, Bozkurt Aran, Ambassador of Turkey, and Einar Gunnarsson, Permanent Secretary of State of the Icelandic Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Iceland currently holds the chairmanship of EFTA.
To mark the occasion, a book tracing EFTA's 50-year history was presented by EFTA's Secretary-General Kåre Bryn (picture). The main part of the book consists of material from a seminar last November which brought together leaders from government and academia. The picture below shows five of the authors present at the 3 May event [from left to right]: Gudmundur Jonsson, University of Iceland, René Schwok, University of Geneva, Richard T Griffiths, University of Leiden, and Ulf Sverdrup and Helge Pharo, both from the University of Oslo.
