The EFTA side was headed by Ambassador Kristinn F. Árnason from Iceland, while Deputy Minister of Economy Valeriy Pyatnytskiy led the Ukrainian delegation.

Delegations of the EFTA States (Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein and Switzerland) and of Ukraine met in Kyiv on 25-28 August 2009 to continue negotiations on a broad-based Free Trade Agreement.

The EFTA-Ukraine negotiations were launched in April 2009. The second round allowed for considerable progress in most areas. Apart from trade in industrial goods, in agricultural products and fish, areas such as rules of origin, trade facilitation, intellectual property rights, trade in services and government procurement were discussed.

The Parties agreed on detailed follow-up work in preparation for the third round foreseen to take place in November 2009. Negotiations between the two sides are expected to be concluded in 2010.
