The EEA Council meeting was chaired by the Norwegian Minister for Foreign Affairs Mr Jonas Gahr Støre, representing the EEA EFTA States. The meeting was attended by Mr Össur Skarphéðinsson, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iceland, by Dr Aurelia Frick, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Liechtenstein, by Mr Carl Bildt, Minister for Foreign Affairs representing the Swedish Presidency of the Council of the European Union, by Members of the Council of the European Union, by a Representative of the European Commission and by the Secretary General of EFTA.
The Ministers discussed the overall functioning of the EEA and held an orientation debate on the climate change. Amongst the other topics discussed were the enhanced cooperation on financial markets issues, the EFTA EEA participation in programmes and agencies, ongoing negotiations on the future financial contributions by the EEA EFTA States for the reduction of economic and social disparities in the EEA, the Climate and Energy Package and the Lisbon Treaty. Within the framework of the Political Dialogue, the Ministers discussed Afghanistan, Iran and the Middle-East.
