EFTA Council discusses relations with countries outside the European Union

The EFTA Council held its first meeting of 2011 on 7 February. The Chair presented Liechtenstein’s priorities for the first half of the year (see separate news item). The Council also reviewed EFTA’s recent activities with countries outside the European Union, including the start of free trade negotiations with Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, as well as those with Indonesia.

At the start of negotiations with Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, which took place from 11 to 13 January in Geneva, the parties held constructive talks allowing for good headway and exchange of information. The Council further discussed the first round of negotiations towards a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) with Indonesia from 31 January to 2 February 2011 in Jakarta, where the parties established the framework and modalities for the negotiations. The next meeting is scheduled for June 2011.

The next Council meeting will take place on 15 March 2011.
