Note: the TRD traineeship position will not be launched in February. The next launch is foreseen in November.
Traineeships are advertised under Current Vacancies in November for the spring term and in February for the autumn term. Deadlines for applications are in December and in March respectively.
Purpose of the traineeships
The aim of the traineeships is to provide junior civil servants and other qualified applicants with a background in customs and rules of origin opportunities for training and familiarisation with the work of the EFTA Secretariat, particularly in the area of free trade agreements.
Field of work
The TRD is in charge of the exploration, negotiation and implementation of preferential trade arrangements with non-EU partner countries worldwide (Declarations on Cooperation, Free Trade Agreements).
The trainee will be assigned to specific tasks primarily in the field of trade in goods and customs issues, including rules of origin and trade facilitation. They entail technical analyses on market access, review and amendments to customs tariff tables, notifications to partner countries, etc.

Traineeships in TRD are reserved for customs officials from national administrations of the EFTA States or candidates with a similar background and experience.
The following criteria are taken into account:
- Adequate educational background. Knowledge of standard office IT applications (Microsoft Office).
- Current position, experience and career objectives.
- Fluency in both written and spoken English; knowledge of French is an advantage.
- An analytical mind with ability to do relevant research and prepare documents in English.
- A flexible and motivated team player capable of taking on a variety of tasks.
- Alteration between EFTA nationalities and gender balance.
Trainees in TRD are assigned to the EFTA Secretariat Headquarters in Geneva.
Traineeships at the EFTA Secretariat–TRD are open to nationals of the EFTA Member States (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland).
Trainees receive a flat monthly allowance (net of taxes) of CHF 2 425. Accommodation in individual flats is provided by EFTA.
