The EFTA Council met on 20 July for the seventh time in 2010 and was chaired by Liechtenstein as Vice-Chair. It commended Iceland on its successful hosting of the Ministerial meeting in June and discussed relations with countries outside the European Union, notably Peru, Indonesia, Hong Kong China and Singapore.

The Council thanked Iceland for hosting the Reykjavik Ministerial meeting on 24 June at which EFTA Ministers marked the 50th anniversary of the Association and signed a free trade agreement (FTA) with Ukraine.

The Council also welcomed the signing of the EFTA-Peru FTA by Martín Pérez Monteverde, Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism of Peru, on 14 July. The FTA had previously been signed by EFTA Ministers on 24 June in Reykjavik.

The Council also noted that during a visit of Swiss President Leuthard to Indonesia on 7 July, a joint statement was issued announcing the launch of a negotiation process on an EFTA-Indonesia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement.
The Council discussed the second negotiating round with Hong Kong, China, which took place in Hong Kong at the end of June, and was informed of meetings held under the EFTA-Singapore FTA in early July.

This was the first meeting of the Council in the second semester of 2010, during which Switzerland holds the rotating EFTA chairmanship.

The Council also signed two joint declarations on cooperation, namely with Malaysia and Panama.

The next Council meeting will take place on 20 September 2010.
